Chapter 12
We greeted Monica, the employee who was manning the check-in counter.
âJohn and Annette wonât be in for the next several days,â Miles told her. âCall Amanda and tell her we need a sub for the check-in counter, until they return.â
âYes sir,â she said.
We went through the gate in the counter and inside our office. Miles sat down at the computer and checked email while I sorted through mail.
âAnything requiring our immediate attention?â asked Miles, as he turned away from the computer.
âNo. How about you?â
âNothing that canât wait,â he said, and looked at his watch. âIâll call Xander, and you call Jenny. If she canât meet right now, weâll tell her John and Annetteâs news later.â
âWeâre between lunch and dinner, so itâll probably be fine,â I said. Bringing up the contact list on my phone, I pressed her number.
âHi, Jenny. You busy? Okay, good. Weâre in the office right now, so why donât you and Xander join us. Yeah, heâs on the phone with Miles. Heâs telling him the same thing. Great. See you in a bit.â
I pressed the end button on my phone, and Miles did the same.
Soon there was a knock at the door. Miles rose from where he sat behind the desk, and ushered in our friends.
âGo ahead and have a seat,â said Miles, indicating two chairs. Miles sat beside me on the small couch that was larger than a chair, but smaller than a loveseat. It was just right for the two of us.
âSo whatâs going on, guys?â asked Xander. âAnd have you seen John and Annette anywhere? Theyâre not answering their phones.â
âYes, actually. They came to see us this morning,â said Miles.
Xander and Jenny looked puzzled.
âThe good news is, you guys both have your own rooms now. You donât have to share anymore,â I said.
âWhy? What happened?â asked Jenny, concerned. âWhere are they?â
âWeâve no idea,â I said, and looked solemn.
Xanderâs forehead was creased, and he looked at Miles and waited for him to explain.
Miles looked at me, and I couldnât help smiling.
âSo just forgo the torture then?â he asked me.
âYeah, sure,â I said. âYou do the honors.â
âWhat?â Xander said, very confused. Jenny was giving us a narrow-eyed look.
âJohn and Annette were married this morning.â
âWhat?!â exclaimed Xander. He clutched the sides of his head, and Jenny was stunned.
âThe couple formerly known as John Turner and Annette James, are now Mr. and Mrs. John Turner,â I smiled.
âYouâve got to be kidding!â Xander practically exploded. His hair was standing on end.
âAnikaâs telling the truth,â Miles said, smiling as I put my arm around him, and squeezed.
âI canât believe they didnât say anything!â said Jenny. âI knew Annette was acting funny⦠I never dreamedâ¦â
âTheyâve been together a long time,â I said. âLonger than we have. I canât imagine waiting as long as they did.â
âI wonder what their families will say,â said Jenny.
âThey donât know yet,â I replied. âHopefully theyâll understand. Whatâs done is done though, and John and Annette are really happy, so⦠I hope their families are understanding.â
âMan, I just canât believe this,â said Xander, his eyes huge as he tried to process the news.
